Biography of Dr Thomas R Wenkart | Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive – Macquarie Health Corporation Limited.

Dr Wenkart graduated from Australia’s highest ranked Medical School University of Sydney in 1968 as a Medical Practitioner, a qualification he still holds today. He has held significant roles with the Australian Medical Association (AMA), The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and Australian Private Hospital Association (APHA).

Since 1970, Dr Wenkart has been actively involved in commercial activities. The dominant sphere of activities has been in the health and medical industries. Initially as a General Practitioner and then as the owner operator of a large integrated medical corporation, Macquarie Health Corporation Limited. This included establishing the largest pathology diagnostic practice in New South Wales (Macquarie Pathology Services, sold to Laverty in 2001); a group of Acute Care Private Hospitals (now 12 locations); and multiple Medical Practice Clinics (Health 24) sold in 2002. In addition, his broader Health Sector interests expanded into computerisation and medical device technologies, including Research and Development, plus manufacturing and retailing.

Founded in 1973, the Australian-owned, Macquarie Health Corporation (MHC) has been helping Australians by providing high-quality, cost-effective healthcare. Today, MHC is one of the nation’s leading providers of healthcare services that includes 12 Private Hospitals, Macquarie Medical Systems, MacRehab, Machealth eHealth solutions and Pen CS ehealth informatics and data solutions.

Pen CS is the major provider of population health primary care data across Australia to Primary Health Networks (PHNs). The Pen CS platform collects over 200 million de-identified patient records per annum and aggregates this information to PHNs in their area. Since 2004, Pen CS has been working with the Indigenous sector, to improve patient outcomes and Close the Gap and act as a facilitator of nKPI reporting data to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).

These enterprises have employed of tens of thousands of Australians over the last 48 years. Technology, Development, Implementation, Management and Property have all been routine elements in fulfilling the successful commercial status now realised. During this time many different activities within the above interests have been undertaken. Dr Wenkart holds many Directorships and also related active roles in the entities which fulfil the above scope.

Dr Wenkart has held or still holds multiple Professional official roles since 1970 in supporting his health and medical interests. He retains full registration to practice as a General Practitioner, even with the broader responsibilities taking his time.

Separate to the commercial interests noted, Dr Wenkart has been a continuous active supporter of not-for-profit, Charitable Enterprises through the Wenkart Foundation and the Health Care Research Institute which he founded in 1976. Of particular interest is the development of the Wenkart Chair of the Endothelium at the University of Sydney, a world first. The Wenkart Foundation also makes notable charitable donations to the Sydney Jewish Museum, the Sydney Opera House, Musica Viva, the State Library of New South Wales and the Honi Soit writing competition at the University of Sydney, encouraging students from a variety of faculties to take part in a fiction and non-fiction writing competition.

The credo for these activities all embrace: ‘Community benefit in the shortest possible time’.

Philanthropic Foundations

The Health Care Research Institute

The Health Care Research Institute (HCRI) was created by the Foundation to help it fulfill its goals in the area of health and medical sciences. Awarding of grants is in the hands of a group of senior experienced individuals drawn from the broad areas of health care delivery, medical research, law, finance, IT and business development. Membership of this panel has been deliberately tailored to represent a broad spectrum of the community and not just medical research. This is in keeping with the broad goals of the Foundation. Panel members are supported by reports from experts in the relevant areas of focus of individual proposals.

The Wenkart Foundation

The Wenkart Foundation is committed to supporting the arts and health sciences in Australia. Since it was established, more than 100 recipients have been supported by grants totalling over $10 million. The Wenkart Foundation Grant Programs provide support to promising young Australians who, although in the early stages of their careers, have demonstrated a special level of potential and demonstrate work that promises to provide the community with ‘significant benefit within a reasonably short time’. The Wenkart Foundation’s credo is “Community benefit in the shortest possible time.” This has been its mantra and focus with satisfying results and associations over the decades. In 2012, The Wenkart Foundation donated $4 million, in the presence of the NSW Governor Dr Marie Bashir, to endow the University of Sydney Wenkart Chair in Endothelium Medicine at the Centenary Institute. All grants are currently managed through the University of Sydney.
